THE LAST HOPE (Kauaʻi ʻōʻō)

i call your name,
i beg for a little solace.

my song echoes through the trees.
i wait for life to be chanted.

the hollow forest answers with silence.

the mute wind caresses the last, drifting feather of hope.

i hear my voice coming back:
one final string of air, gasping your name.

the world shut me down like a lonely,
flickering light at the dusk of time.

do not weep for me.

we will reunite once again,
swiftly spreading our wings in the unlimited blue.

About this poem

The Kauaʻi ʻōʻō is a bird species that went extinct in the 80s. The male's beautiful song should be answered by the female's, yet no specimens were left: in the last recording (which you can find on YouTube), the pauses should be filled by the female's answer.
