Cat and Dog

Cat and Dog

Way back when the earth was flat
lost treasures could be blamed on cat
who liked to sneak beneath the hedge
and loved to push things off the edge.

But now we know the earth is round.
Treasures are lost and can’t be found.

Why I Cry

I wake up warm in a nice soft bed,
With a solid shelter above my head.
My pantry is stocked with all that I need.
I have water to drink and books to read.

I can walk freely in air that is pure,
Breathing in deeply as I watch the deer.
As...

Still Living

Sometimes as I look at the world, I think,
“It’s a good thing that I’m on the brink.”

At eighty years old, I’ve not long to go.
Will I outlast democracy? I really don’t know.

And then I look at what I have left to do,
Books I have...

When I'm old

I like people very much
It’s with myself I’m not in touch.
When I was young, I thought I would
When I grew old, be wise and good

I thought I’d learn and never make
Another thoughtless, dumb mistake,
But alas, so far, it is not true.

Wake and Rage

She came to me softly in a dream
clothed in light and beauty
She spoke in quiet wonderment
and called me to my duty,

Come forth from darkness; rule the day
Why do you hide your head
It’s time to wake, throw off despair
and refute the things...

I have to say I'm a bit embarrassed that after going through 149 poems, this one still rose to the top and stayed. And I'm a prudish, proper, white-haired octogenarian, Oh, my! But I loved the rhyme, meter, and mostly I thought it clever. It made me lol, and in this day and age, that is a treat.

I read this poem so many times, falling more in love with it each time. I love the metaphor of depression as prison warden and the prison as your mind. This poem is so apt, so true, so poignant. I like how the author continues the metaphor throughout the poem, applying it so aptly to what depression is, and still maintaining the rhyming style. The other prisoners, of whom you're well acquainted, are earlier versions of self, and occupy the prison of your mind. The ammunition for the evil, cruel warden's gun are memories that he loves to shoot. "Nothing would give him more pleasure " It is so true that past regrets are the weapons depression uses against us. Wow. Like I said, I love everything about this poignant poem. Thanks for sharing it. It's likely one I will commit to memory.

I like everything about this poem, the rhyme, cadence, but mostly the heart-rending message which I wish everyone would read with empathy.

I love that this sad, poignant poem honors the innocent victims of a hate crime. It shows the danger and damage done by lies propagated on the Internet pushed by creating fear and divisive hatred. It warns that this is not the end, for the root cause continues and grows. It's an important message that seems so hard to get across in this climate of hate and greed.
