My Vow to you

My son, when I gave birth to you
I birthed a new side of me.
For it was the first time in my life
I discovered how much love I had inside of me.
Although I  bore scars that left me confused
I knew I'd have to pour out love that had never been used.

As you grew you charted your course
You led with courage and unrestrained force.
I was being led by God to groom you for life,
On becoming a man and perhaps finding a wife.

I recall the day when I met with disdain
A woman who called her son out of his name.
And in this public setting, I saw a man begin to shrink
I saw the hurt, I felt the pain and I began to think!
I thought to myself how could this be so,
Give him the space he needs to grow.

From that moment I declared the vow,
I am about to share with you now.
I remembered the words, 'If I could'.
Sung by Regina Belle, she said, I would.

I vow to help build your self esteem
To encourage you to know how upon the Spirit to lean.
To edify, love and validate you
To shape your mind, to give you truth.
To praise you even in the midst of terror
Because to devalue your worth could possibly lead to error.

I vow never to emasculate and strip away
Any kind of intellect that you may display.
Because your manhood is reflective of God the Creator
I vow to saturate your being with nothing greater.

I vow to celebrate, to elevate and educate...you
I vow to each dream support since a lack of it...can cause it to abort!
I vow to hold you accountable, when it counts.
I vow to exercise faith for when you doubt.
I realize that your purpose and worth are tied to the Divine
And if I ever insulted your intelligence, then you would not be aligned.
I vow that my example would create a path of authenticity.
After all you were created to possess your own identity.
