2,000 Years From Now - A World without Humans - Short Story

No more, the humans were no more. Nature thrived without them. Paths became forests and grasslands. Animals became free to multiply and yet some were lost on the way. Tigers and rhinos had become extinct. Some birds had been shot down. Humans had hunted the red kite and the peregrine falcon and it was no more. It was very sad. It was also sad that humans did not exist. If only they could have found a way to survive and thrive alongside nature.

Deer ran free. Free from the hunter's gun. In many ways the world was a beautiful place and at peace. The hardy pigeon was no longer seen as vermin. No one to judge her.

Trees were in abundance and kept the air healthy. So many birds and mammals were safe in their homes. Yet no children to watch the squirrels play. No laughter from a young child. A blessing or a curse that humans did not exist? They were the ones who had become extinct while nature took over or should I say took back what belonged to her. She was fine until humans interfered.

Two thousand years from now and the seas are full of the most beautiful and colourful fish. No such thing as over fishing. Sad and joyful at the same time. Bitter-sweet. Nature thrives yet we lose humans along the way.

Ivy crept all over old broken houses. Insects made it their home. Finding food and shelter amongst its green lush leaves. Blackberry brambles spread rapidly. Their delicious fruits providing food for the birds and mammals. Wild strawberries filled the grasslands.

The climate had settled as there were no carbon emissions polluting the atmosphere. Seasons took on a natural rhythm again. Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter as the flora a fauna worked with the seasons.

It was a relief and yet it was a tragedy. Did it really have to come to this? If only the clock could turn back to two thousand years before and somehow humans realised they too were part of nature. They too had their part to play to co-exist with nature and work along side nature for everyone's sake. Then perhaps we could hear that child's laughter as she watches the little squirrels chase each other. For she too is part of nature.
