Something More

Kristy Brown 1984 (Nova Scotia)

Sparkling gold warms the breadth
Disdain thoughts blacken my head
I gaze out the window to see the incandescent sky
A night spent in restless wonder haunts my mind

Why do these thoughts burden me?
The well travelled road would work easily
But here I exist, complicating everything
Always the hard road, the one less taken

“There’s gotta be something more for me”
I scream in the quiet of my soliloquy
Something bigger and more challenging
“The best is yet to come”, is endearing

I pace the floor searching my mind
For some kind of answer, a moment in time
Something that tells me it will all be alright
Uneasy threatens my peace with might

Deep down I know it works in the end
The pages turn and the world is your friend
In the tired moments during the pain
It’s hard to imagine yet alone maintain

I suppose I will put all of my eggs in a basket
Roll the dice, gamble my life if they’ll have it
Put faith in the unseen,
Toss it all in a tureen
Give up my wishes
For second-luck chances
Throw away the manifestations
The hopes, the prayers and frustrations

Here I am, raw and unclothed
Ready for truth, Ready to be shown
Where my legacy leads me
My way was beseeching
I give it all up
Take the lessons, and leave me.

About this poem

I yearn for more in life. I feel there is something bigger that I’m meant to do. These words express my thoughts around that.
