In a world such as this

Kylie Kenny 2006 (New Jersey)

In a world such as this I no longer lock eyes with a fellow woman and wonder why I don't look like her or question why god chose her to hold more beauty than I;
However, in a world such as this I now know that our Bodies are not storefront windows;
They do not need to be perfectly presented in order to Appeal to others around us;
To catch the eyes of people passing by;
For our bodies give us the chance to live;
Our bodies tell stories;
Freckles from the long days spent in the sun;
Scars from the days I decided to be a bit too adventurous;
Eyebags from the nights I stayed up to late conversating with the people  I love;
Sure my eyes may be a shade of basic blue;
But I have used them to witness so many extraordinary things;
And yes my legs may be covered in bruises, bumps, and scrapes;
But man have I used them to explore such wonderful places;
Our bodies will never truly gain approval In a world such as this;
But I sure am grateful for it;
For my body gives me a chance to feel, a chance to feel as if I have lived

About this poem

I wrote this poem about the struggles many girls face, myself included, while growing up and constantly comparing myself to others around me.

I grew up with a tough family situation so I was constantly looking for ways out. My biggest escape from reality has always been writing as it allows me to see the beauty and find peace in even the darkest areas of my life. more…
