Depression: The Grand Puppet Master
Depression: The Grand Puppet Master
With a smile upon my face and love in my eyes, I am drowning;
Darkness and despair all around, everything hopeless and pointless.
As I go through the motions, I am the master of pretending;
Surrounded by family and friends, I am filled with loneliness.
I grow silent, my mind goes blank, I struggle to breathe, no one sees;
I show the world a person filled with confidence, self-assurance.
Trapped, screaming deep down, forever lost, no one hears my silent pleas;
Laughter, hollow to my ears, depression made its reappearance.
It comes and it goes, no rhyme or reason, like a thief in the night;
I fear happiness, the higher I go, the farther I will fall.
As it tightens its hold, as I break, I fight it with all my might;
Not quite sadness, something more, much much more, death embodied and all.
I am fine, even when I am not fine, I will always be fine.
I am fine, even when I am not fine, I will always be fine.
About this poem
I feel mental illness is a topic that is not discussed at its true nature enough. Most literature on the topic is superficial at best. I like to use my art form to approach topics that are deemed taboo.
