An Evening Prayer
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
Please answer me when I call,
O God of my righteousness;
Give me relief from my fall,
When I had so much distress.
Be gracious to hear my prayer,
How does honor turn to shame;
For the vain words that I share,
Seek after lies I proclaim.
But know the Lord sets apart,
As He hears me when I call;
Because He knows in my heart,
Willing to save when I fall.
I stand in awe and sin not,
Pondering my heart in bed;
Anger brings silence when sought,
Sacrifices that I’m fed.
Sacrifice of righteousness,
Putting my trust in the Lord;
Show some good what God does bless,
Lift the light in one accord.
Lift up the light to Your face,
To put more joy in my heart;
When the grain and wine embrace,
A harvest that fills the cart.
In peace, I lie down to rest,
In safety You make me dwell;
Tomorrow I do my best,
With You, O Lord, I am well.
