Claim me

Claim me

You're not ready for labels
and I'm not sure they'd stick on me anyway
But I ask you
Claim me

Claim me
with pride and humility
until the very air I breathe is so full of
you
that for a moment there's nothing left of
me
then with your hands
pull the ecstasy of rebirth onto my skin
allow it to seep into the core of me
so I may carry us forever in my bones

Claim me
beyond reason
lead me onto a path
where questions of
where we're going, and
what we might become
evaporate

Claim me
until I surrender myself on your doorstep
wrapped in nothing but sheer trust
my truest form
exposed
My vails lifted
revealing the melody of
our shared dreaming

Claim me
So that we may know what it is
to live without doubt
So that I may finally know
what it feels like to belong
to something
other than
 moonlit nights
windy beaches, and
oceanic horizons

No, I don't need a label
I'm not an item on your shopping list
But I want you to claim me
as if I was the very life in your lungs

About this poem

I wrote this poem when I was dating someone who wasn't ready to be in a relationship. This poem was a way for me to explain the complexities of what I was wanting and needing. It's about freedom and belonging

Sophia Hawkes

I’m, Sophia a poet, writer, breath-work facilitator by the Sacred Breath Academy, Death-Walker, woman, mother, friend, dog owner and lover of all things wild. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Cross University, where I majored in Writing and Cultural studies but also comprehensively studied trauma. Moreover I’m a trained grief and loss support volunteer worker by what used to be the Bellingen branch of NALAG (National Association of Loss And Grief), Australia. For years I was a regular contributor to Capture Magazine, Australia’s most prominent photograph magazine for emerging and professional photographers, you can find some of my articles here, https://www.capturemag.com.au/search?q=Sophia+Hawkes. I was born and raised in Sweden but moved to Australia on my own in 2005, the year I turned twenty five. I don’t write poetry by choice but because it’s the only way through heart ache, injustice, beauty, life and death, poetry is an inevitable byproduct of the depth with which I experience existence. If I wasn’t a poet my guess is I would have spontaneously combusted at some point during the last few decades. I’m currently working on gathering all my poems into a poetry collection that I’m looking at self-publishing but I have no poems previously published. I have never tried to get any of my poems published and I won’t publish my poetry collection before the end of this competition. more…
