Time Flies When Your Having Fun with Children

Who is it that you’ve become?
I closed my eyes just one time
And you shot up by at least two feet
Now you’re a familiar face filled with moody angst

What kind of sick trick is this?
I closed my eyes for just one second
And you dare ditch diapers
for quirky quips on lively lips

Where did you master sleight of hand?
I closed my eyes for just one blink
and you trade building blocks
with viral trends and online friends.

When did hide & seek change your physique?
I closed my eyes for one count of ten
you outgrew your shoes, and
You think you’re too big for cuddles, too.

Why didn’t I prepare for this?
I closed my eyes and kissed you goodnight
Your tiny hand relaxed in mine
Now, precious memories flood my eyes with tears

How did you make time fly by?
I closed my eyes and took one breath
And you’re standing in the doorway
ready to make your own way & forge your own path.

Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How
are questions I ask from time to time.
When I catch a glimpse of the sweet baby that grew up
Before my eyes, ready to spread wings and fly.

About this poem

My youngest child just turned 13, making me a mom of 2 teens. I realized how fast time has gone by as they grow into the independent people they are today. I am so proud of who they've become but miss when mommy was the center of their world. This poem is dedicated to my babies- who will always be my babies, until my final breath.
