To Nostalgia

Masa Byrd 2005 (Okinawa)

To Nostalgia,
Some find you creepy and odd, but not me.
I adore your presence.
You are a means of escape for me;
Getting to dive headfirst into the memories of the past;
Reminiscing on things and events already done.
It does not take much to trigger your leap into action;
To provoke your occurrence;
To bring about your familiar yet foreign feelings of times long since gone.
Whether it be a song, or movie, or word, or picture,
All of those things and many more,
It is not hard to say to you at all
That you have guided me to an open door.
Things from the 50s, 60s, or 70s,
1980s and 90s, too,
You are a display, a timeline of our evolution
That showcases onto the world on how we all grew
So liminal and eerie,
Yet also so cheery
Like nothing else can.
Oh, how happy I am
Whenever you are near me!!
To Nostalgia, I say.
To Nostalgia!!
To memories past and their reminders.
To Nostalgia, and all that can cause it to be.
Nostalgia: The Gate to the past which happens too fast for us to comprehend.
You give us another chance to look, live, and learn.
You are the only way to go back.
If The Timing is right, then
You are 'Tor Zur Vergangenheit' and the key to the future as well.
You cry out to me as clearly as a bell,
How exactly you work your magic, I may never be able to tell.
But it does not matter anyway, because when you cast your spell,
It works every time and there is no need to rhyme to explain how you make me feel.
In fact, let's be real.
I cannot describe the feeling you give to me.
It is too hard to explain.
But I feel like there is a liminal connection between me and history,
One that just cannot be explained.
It is very hard to describe,
So I am not going to even try because it will be pointless.
My point is,
I appreciate you.
Everything you do and continue to do, too.
Every time you knock on the door to my brain,
I let you in.
After all, any attempt to stop you from coming along would be in vain.
You are a part of human nature, embedded deep into our subconscious.
Surfacing again and again like a breaching whale, coming up for a breath of fresh air.
To refuel your soul;
To see the outside world,
and remember the good old days with me.
And,
To me at least,
That is a good thing.

About this poem

I had to write this for an English Assignment. Everyone thought it was very good, so I decided to publish it to the internet. I came across this site and thought it would be a good place to publish it. EDIT: The date of birth is wrong. It's supposed to be October 20, 2005, not 1005. It would be cool to be 1018 years old, but I'm not. EDIT: I fixed the DOB.
