Meagan Raab 1985 (Ohio)
I’m fine, I’m just tired.
I’m tired, please just let me be.
I’m tired, can’t you see!
I’m tired, don’t you believe?
I’m tired, you just don’t get it.
I’m tired, my mind won’t free.
I’m tired… sometimes of being me.
I want to give up, but I still fight.
What can I do?
My heart aches at night.
I worry I am failing; I feel burnt-out.
I don’t know myself anymore, I’m torn apart.
This is not how I use to be; this is not me.
I’m drowning in my tears; they blur my sight.
Ok, ... I’m not alright.
I put on a brave face, even though I'm in a sad space.
Pushed to my limits, but handled with grace.
I have no more patience; the pain will not erase.
My head held up high, with hurt deep inside.
This is why I cry.
You are so energetic in everything you do,
Frustrations get to you,
Your quarks are what make you blossom,
Personality that is beyond awesome.
Tempers may flare for unexplained reasons.
Simple but hard battles to make connections.
But your uniqueness always shines through,
Even on a hard day of being you.
Your smile radiating with such care
And you always seem to want mommy near.
Some things you don’t notice, except those of interest.
The best part of you, your heart is pure and true.
This is why, I love you.

About this poem
This poem is rich in feelings about struggles and the weight on oneself when raising a son with Autism. I know I am not alone, but sometimes no matter how hard I try, it can feel like I am.
