We Will Prevail

We didn't see it coming
We couldn't have known
That for a few hours our worlds would stop
That we would put our lives on hold

We sat glued to our television sets
We saw the horrible scene
As we sat in school or at home
We saw icons collapse into nothingness

We still cannot comprehend
We are still grieving our tragic loss
We will always remember
What we saw that one fateful day

Our country will prevail
That is what we were told
We must be strong
So we can begin to heal our tragic wounds

Flags fly at half mast
Countries all over pray for us
We must be strong
For our country--and world--will prevail

About this poem

I wrote this poem two days after 9/11. I was so upset and depressed that I was moved to write about the event. Years later, the poem still brings me to tears as I remember that horrible day as a high schooler.

I grew up in Alabama and developed my love for writing fiction and poetry as a teenager, right when 9/11 occurred. I always wrote what I was feeling at the time, and this really moved me. more…
