I Had No Shoes

Who has no
challenges in life?
Who is that man
that lacks
nothing
in this life?

Who is that man
that faces
no trials,
no troubles,
in his life?

Celestine Ukwu
 who died in the 80's
 once sang:
"if you complain bitterly
in the public,
about your problems,
about your problems;
you will
be surprised
be surprised,
when you meet a man
whose life challenges
far outways yours.

Then
you will be forced
to walk home
to walk home
rejoicing...
rejoicing...
singing your
 favourite tune.

One
disgruntled man,
disgruntled man,
climbed a tree
and was ready
to commit
suicide...

Below a tree
lay
a dying man
abandoned
to perish
to perish.

The hopeless
dying man
gave a stern warning,
a stern warning,
"...don't disturb
my peace
my peace;
life is too precious
to be wasted."

I had no shoes,
yes, no shoes,
until I met
a man
who had no legs
who had no legs.

About this poem

"Onye ka ozuru". "Who has everything complete in life?" Who has no challenges? That's an Igbo rethortical question.
