Waving Society Web

ShazzyN 1985 (Cape Town)

Society, oh society,
A complex web we weave,
With norms and rules aplenty,
And expectations to achieve.

A place where we are born,
And learn to walk and talk,
A world that can transform,
From a haven to a block.

In society we find our place,
Our roles and our goals,
And sometimes we must face,
The price of fitting those molds.

We strive for acceptance,
And sometimes conformity,
But at what expense,
To our individuality?

For society can be a trap,
That stifles and confines,
A place where we must adapt,
To fit its narrow confines.

Yet amidst this tangled web,
There are moments of grace,
Where we find love and support,
And a sense of belonging in this space.

So let us strive to make,
A society that's kind and just,
Where diversity is embraced,
And no one is left in the dust.

For society, oh society,
Is what we make it to be,
A place of beauty or anxiety,
A reflection of humanity

About this poem

The title "Weaving Society's Web" refers to the idea that society is a complex web that is constructed and interconnected by individuals and their actions. It highlights how we all contribute to shaping society through our choices and behaviors, and how this web can either serve as a supportive and nurturing environment or as a restrictive and oppressive one.
