Free verse
Oh Laika,
You were told you’d be the best
Put on a pedestal
Russia’s first dog in space
A conquest I cannot comprehend

A dog in space?
What kind of dog?
Does she know where she’s headed?

Laika
I wonder if they gave you your favorite meal

Were you not loved?
I would have loved you.

They chose you to die
They stripped you of everything
But your life is proof
Proof of their right to progress with sacrifice

Laika
Did you see the stars?

I hope she knows she was loved.
