My Reflection

Menajisa 2001 (United States)

Mirror

As I looked at my reflection, I seen a broken little girl.
Had to grow up early in life in such a wicked world.

Me

I stopped looking in the mirror 'cause I didn't want to face reality.
I can lie to everyone that I'm fine, but I can't hide from myself.

Weird

Maybe because I'm afraid of all the damage that's been done.

Hurt

My inner being was crying out for help.
Don't want to be trapped inside anymore.

Release

Started back looking in the mirror. Cried. Hold myself because I needed healing.
Told the little girl in me that it's safe now no more hurt.

Living

My reflection holds the secrets to my past. The mirror knew my hurt in a weird way. Yet, it released me of the person dying in me. I woke up and chose to start living.

About this poem

My inner child was my biggest enemy. Had me feeling trapped, hurt, and broken inside. I didn't want to be that way anymore and had to face the reality of things. I can't change the past, but I can make my future better.
