The Electrocardiogramic Symphony
The electrocardiogramic device did sound
Its final symphony, with notes most sweet
But as it ended, not a soul around
Did raise a hand, or offer up a clap to greet
The close of this melodic composition
No ovation came, nor any accolade
For all the beauty in its modulation
Was lost upon the ears of those who stayed
The transducer's tune, though rich in harmony
Did fall upon deaf ears, and fade away
A symphony unappreciated, sadly
Its beauty, lost to those who could not stay
Thus, in this world of apathy and haste
True art is oft ignored, and goes to waste.
About this poem
The sonnet, "The Electrocardiogramic Symphony," is a poignant reflection on the fleeting nature of art and beauty, and the apathy and haste of the world that allows it to go unappreciated. The metaphor of the electrocardiogramic device, with its "final symphony" and "notes most sweet," serves to underscore the fleeting and ephemeral nature of the art in question. The "transducer's tune" is described as "rich in harmony," yet it "did fall upon deaf ears," and ultimately "faded away. " The final couplet drives home the theme of the poem, that "in this world of apathy and haste/True art is oft ignored, and goes to waste." The sonnet employs a complex vocabulary that adds an elegant and sophisticated tone to the poem. The rhyme scheme is consistent throughout the sonnet and it adds to the overall aesthetic of the poem. more »
