Fractured Mirror
Mirrors are traitors
As all I may reflect in them
is someone who longs to look like someone
someone that doesn't exist or never will exist upon this earth
Constant comparing
the most unbearable feeling of discomfort within your skin
Like the body you have wasn’t what you asked for
Touching your unwanted parts which you think you didn't need
But for the most part you didn’t realize it was normal to have
Society told you differently
Societal standards kept you suffocating
as you felt the need to be good enough in order to feel loved
Feeling trapped within your body doing anything you could to change it
all of these emotions kept me not wanting to be who I was and only what society wanted
I’m a survivor
I've escaped the dungeons of my own identity
Turning out to be the biggest enemy of them all
It was all this false idea of beauty which caught me like a lost soul
I am still to be found as this will never leave me
Shaping me into who I am to become
But I know what I don’t want to be anymore
I don’t want to be that mirror that was looked in with disgust
I’m tired of playing the bad guy in my own story
I’m tired of portraying someone that I am not
As years will pass by it will still hit me like a relapse
to realization of what I have become of this
Though I say I have escaped
it will never truly unlock my darkest past
which I want to move on from to start a new path
It's a constant battle which I have to fight
every single day my body is allowed on this earth
Feeling like those years are wasted
but not knowing these were my most important years of my life
It was all just a fantasy
starting a flame within myself
leaving a mark I know I will never leave behind me
as I continue to grow
I will remember those moments which would push me off the edge
Finally free
Taking a leap off of it
About this poem
This poem is about my struggles with my body image. With growing up with body dysmorphia it was so hard to break the negative thoughts about myself when it was so forced upon me. I hope this poem brings awareness to anyone who can relate to it, being as that's my main point of this piece in particular.
