That Little Girl We All Once Knew
Musa Mnguni 2005 (Western Cape)
That little girl we all once knew
The little girl whose best friend farted in her face in preschool
The little girl who loved climbing trees
Who loved eating shredded polony mayo sandwiches
And nap time after playing outside
The girl whose best friend left to New Zealand in grade 2
The girl who watched herself experience her first crush
The girl who was still dependent on her parents for common sense
Who daily learned the difference between right and wrong
Who realised that it’s possible to feel the same way about both men and women
The young woman who realised that she should trust herself more than anyone else
The young woman who realised that it’s okay to cry in front of people
The young woman who realised that she should be careful who she calls family
The young woman who finally saw that life after suicide gets better
The young black woman who gets dragged for being whitewashed
The teenage girl who can’t tell the difference between happiness and a temporary distraction from sadness
The thick girl whose body is “goals”
The fragile human being who is trying to survive
