Excuses

Excuses

Excuses are how they keep you,
Keep you in their web of lies,
Lies built on your life,
Lies built on your shoulders.

Excuses are how they keep you,
Keep you drawn to the minimum,
Drawn to the good times,
Drawn to the good things they did.

Excuses are how they keep you,
Keep you happy with what you have,
Pleased with the bare minimum,
Happy with what you can get.

Excuses are how they keep you,
Keep you in their lives when they are failing you,
Failing your emotional needs,
And ignoring the words, you speak.

Excuses are how they keep you,
Keep you at their feet,
At their feet, begging on your knees,
Begging for a bit of peace.
Excuses are how they keep you.

About this poem

This poem was written during my recovery from depression and narcissistic abuse, it is about being trapped by someone’s excuses and how they can keep you in that toxic relationship.
