Eulogy for Mother
Eulogy for Mother
Stardust and cosmic breath combine in the vacuum of space
One clod among quadrillions in a whirling cosmos, elements conglomerate
She found her place in an annual race caught by gravity’s embrace
One of nine contenders for a star’s perfect kiss upon her unformed face
Magnetic strength aligned her as she cycled dark and light
Her critical mass made magma and gas, her atmosphere formed so bright
Millennia from her watery birth, land emerged on this new earth, boulders, stones, sand
A millennia more, in the muck lightning struck, life, very simple, began
Through mythical eyes, life’s diversities rise, might have happened in only a week
But life’s origin story is brutal and gory as the fittest survived, not the meek
Through millions of years, manifold life appeared, in skies, and lands, and seas
Ecosystems emerged symbiotic, landscapes serine and exotic, seasons that all pleased
She was now mother, and like her no other, nature’s balance her glorious lilt
As hominids rose, with their fingers and toes, her balance began to tilt
Their craniums grew, their communities too, with their dominance none could contend
“Civilizations” rise would mark her demise, the cancer of “more” was her end
Once brilliant and blue did she dance with her star, an oasis, life’s only base
She’s now lifeless and stark, her atmosphere dark, just another rock drifting in space
