The story of yet another brown girl

The story of another brown girl

“She’ll do this, she’ll become that”
As an infant the only words i ever hear
Not understanding what they’re saying

“Good girls do this, good girls do that”
As a toddler the only words i ever hear
Agreeing to anything I’m told to believe

“Smart girls do this, smart girls do that”
As a kid the only words i ever hear
Setting my goals to people’s expectations

“Respectable girls do this, respectable girls do that”
As a teenager the only words i hear
Accept this time i am my own person

“But i want to do this, not that”
This time i fight, this time i express myself
I have dreams, I have hopes

“Accomplished women do this, accomplished women do that”
As a teenager the only words i hear
They don’t listen, they don’t hear

Expectations, expectations, expectations
Drowning in an endless sea
Hurt, in pain

I want to live, i want to love
I want to feel something, make mistakes, learn
I am human
