Analysis of Merry Christmas

Again, again, another year is ending,
don’t you see my King, my friend?
Carolers sing boisterously once more,
and almost gone is time of yore.
My heart nearly crawls my throat,
for upon you it begs to dote,
but if I let it do as it pleases
it will be me that it teases.
To use the key and unlock the door,
to take the knife and cut out my core,
would be, for your sake, the only gift
that might stop you from going adrift.
As I start to fight Love’s ceaseless urges
a truth tears me open as it emerges:
sending my heart would be in vain
as made example by an ear profane.
Sear this heart of mine;
it is easier to bear than you being benign.
I err in wanting to bring you back
because it does remind me of what I lack.
