Analysis of Tomorrow, There’ll Be More of Us

This is America, the greatest country in the world right?
Freedom of speech, 2nd amendment, makes us the best right?
The American dream has brought millions to our shores, right?
Then tell me why those who built America are still forced to claw and fight

See, this is America
We’re the best, a great force to be reckon
A place where a cop can murder a black man by kneeing on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds
A place where athletes shine and culture reverberates around the world
And a place where hundreds of unarmed black men have been taken from their little boys and girls

We’re the worlds police
But the police in our country are killing black people in the streets
Don’t get me wrong
I don’t blame you for thinking America is great
In many ways it is
But in many more it ain’t

This is America
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
Do people need to be reminded of the very men who wrote that shit?
Slaveowners, white men who created the greatest document ever
But a thought of giving black people their freedom, never

We’ve been hypocritical from the start
Oh and don’t let me forget to mention, that slavery never really ended
It just moved from share cropping to prisons
Are all Americans racist? Of course not
And that’d be ridiculous to say
But the institutions that this country were built on are, in every way

This is America
A place where we tout our freedom and might
But also a place where black parents lie in wake nervous that their kids might not make it back home safe at night
A place where a white kid can shoot up a church and get taken to Burger King
But also where Breonna Taylor had her life taken away in her own home without even the courtesy of a doorbell ring

We’re the greatest democracy ever and it’s truly a blessing to live here
Tell that to the almost 100 black people that have been murdered by cops this year
A place where white people never have to worry about interactions with the police
But where black parents must have daily conversations about how to behave on the streets

You want the definition of white privilege? Just check the statement above
Tell me white moms and dads, how many times have you had to tell your kids that
My guess is none

This is America
A place where we have to the freedom to protest
But also a place where you get “fuck you’s”
When kneeling for the flag cause it’s seen as disrespect
A place where white men can tote guns and storm city halls with no backlash
But a peaceful protest for black lives
Here comes the military and tear gas

But all lives matter right?
Miss me with that
Cause they didn’t when this country was born
They didn’t for 100 years after
They didn’t during Jim Crow
They didn’t during the Tulsa race massacre
They didn’t during segregation
They didn’t during watts riots
They didn’t during the ‘92 LA riots
They didn’t when Trayvon Martin, Eric Gardner, and Philando Castile were murdered
And now you want to say all lives matter, you don’t think that’s selfish just a bit?
Do you wanna start the country over and reverse everything?
Yea, I highly doubt it

From the boycotts to the sit-ins
From the Underground Railroad to the front of the bus
We’re the generation fighting for a new America
And tomorrow, there will be more of us

About this poem

I wrote this poem during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement surrounding the unjust killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. I’m from Louisville, KY so it hit especially close to home when the murder of Breonna hit the news. This poem is about the people of America. The true people. The people who still have to suffer, claw, and fight in this country every day even though they’re the ones that built it. To whoever reads, I hope you enjoy.
