Analysis of We had a cat

Karen C. Levy 1968 (Kingston)

We Had a Cat

We had a cat called Megabeast
She was almost certainly a dog,
but that was the least
She would pick fights,
sneak out at nights
and not be back till morning light.

Orange splotched, brown and grey was she
Often wounded, scratched, red from blood
but not diminished, believe me.
Strange cats, dogs, pigeons, rats,
hens, cockerels, mongoose, bats
couldn’t scamper about, that’s that.

Once some fried fish went missing
The beast struck
she had stolen this sinting
My dad wasn’t pleased
our family was uneased
and Megabeast was gone until searching seized.

Miss Megabeast became a mommy
Yes, found herself a tubby, a hubby, a bobby.
We’re expecting her babies now to be her hobby.
She placed her kitties where she would
She was the woman of the house,
so of course she could
Let me be fair, she cared for them when she could,
and maybe when she should
But this didn’t limit her
fighting days in the hood.

Long story short, she lived a long cat life
Got hitched, and had kittens who lived,
Some died, but she tried.
Fought dogs, cats, killed pigeons and mice
A dog killed her on top of a shack
We found out too late
when she was attacked
But yeah, we had a cat!

About this poem

This poems tells you a little about a real fighting cat we had at home in our teens. The name "Megabeast" is also what we called her.
