Analysis of Independence

i used to love the forth of july
the fireworks ,the beautiful colors shot into the sky
the one i spent with you, made me indifferent.
there were no sparks and laughter.
there had been tears and treading water
the boat rocked and waited
as the show in the sky erupted.
splashes and cheers rang from you and your friends
as you flipped into the sea from the bow
i jumped in after you
you said you would catch me, you told me to fit in, you told me to come along,
you let me fall into the depths,
the lights in the sky long gone,
i felt frozen underneath the water
the icy silence, compared to the joyous shouts above
i kicked and kicked my way to the surface
i barely knew how to swim
you said you would catch me—help me swim to the ladder, you never did.
you told me that if you helped me,
they would know that you cared for me.
i didn’t know that wasn’t allowed
Caring for the girl you had spent 12 moons with.
You told me you didn’t want your friends to see you close to me,talking to me, playing with me, being my boyfriend
You said your mothers wouldn’t approve.
Would they rather me drown, then you dare show affection?
Did their future gossip matter more to you than me?
you never even glanced my way as you heard the water fighting against my efforts.
i used to love the forth of july.
Now it feels like drowning.

About this poem

This poem is about an experience I had over a year ago with someone I used to be with and it explains one specific situation but really it represents the relationship as a whole.
