Analysis of Fire Burns Everything It Cares To Touch

Birds used to fly to the stars, to the moon.
As time grew, so did problems.
It seemed that the fire was going to take over soon.
The smoke contained everything and made everything seem impossible.

Somehow the birds escaped and made it to another forest.
This forest was greener, but soon the fire spread.
Instead of running, they stayed put and didn’t try to escape.
The fire swallowed them as they wished this was a dream and would wake up in bed.

The fire didn’t care to stop for a couple of little birds.
The fire didn’t care how old they were, it didn’t matter.
Nothing in the world mattered when that fire started, only the hateful words
that it told everything, the words that swallowed someone whole.

Almost every tree, every plant, and every animal burns within the flames.
It makes some think, “what a shame.”
“They had such a beautiful life to live.”
“They were just selfish and didn’t think about what it would give.”

They think that the wind puts out the fire, but it only makes it worse.
That’s not how fire works at all.
You see, people can’t live normally with it, they don’t get a chance to pay the bill.
It’s not being selfish, it’s a symptom of being mentally ill.

About this poem

This poem discusses a topic that most don’t feel comfortable talking about. The birds represent people, the stars and moon represents goals and dreams, the fire represents depression, the smoke represents the dark thoughts, and the trees/plants represents hope. Besides the poem representing depression, what’s really being described is the situation of how a person can be driven to suicide.
