Analysis of Balm in Gilead

Marked for pain
Circumstances of life each take their turn
Arrow after arrow I am pierced
There is a road sign to my soul warning Wounds ahead

I lap on hard pills to swallow
My hearts’ tongue has lost its sweet bud
When ice cream melts on it
It bitterly hates the cold

I am conversant with sorrow
She is quite the talker
Night after night I have filled my ears with her stories
Some of which are actually classics told over generations to lovely women like me
Pity they don't ever sound too important when repeated to the police or the mother or the neighbour
Fairytales they say..

A woman must give..
a man deserves..
And all I have is the Balm in Gilead

About this poem

Every person goes through difficult times that inflicts pain. It may feel as though the pain will never end as circumstance after circumstance, the pain seems to build up. As if that ain't enough, women are victimized, abused, used and left for dead simply for being the weaker gender. It has become a part of human culture and the please fall into deaf ears. Eventually their only help is in God (and in the christian religion one referred to the Balm in Gilead).
