Analysis of THE SANDMAN

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

The Sandman is slowly coming
From out of the red desert sand,
A shape-changing beast of silicon
Who travels out across the land.

He is bringing his word of death
To all of the sleeping city folk,
Who seem to hear his every word
Even though he never really spoke.

Through the sleeping town by night
The Sandman is softly wandering,
Hoping soon to cast his evil spell
Like a mad warlock evilly conjuring.

He hopes to transform the sleeping
Into other creatures of red sand,
They will then be in his evil thrall
And willing to do his every command.

The Sandman is rapidly approaching
A house where innocent people sleep,
Collapsing to sand, he gets under the door
Then through the building, he softly creeps.

Sneaking into an occupied room
He lightly touches the sleeper's nape,
And soon she begins to transmogrify
Into a ghastly red sandy shape.

Through the house, he continues on
Turning the occupants all into sand,
So soon they will go out with him
As his army follows him over the land.

Through the sleepy town by night
Leading his monstrous platoon,
Until he has swept right through
Like some kind of deadly monsoon.

Too soon the people are all his
And obey his every horrid whim,
And as he heads back into the desert
His red sand army follows after him.
