Analysis of Nestle Does my Bedtime Bird
Matthew Franklin Allen 1991 (Cleveland, Ohio)
Imagining a vantage through sentimental memories;
A "personified natural construct" analogy
of resting and waving amidst a swaying canopy,
on a sturdy branch of undisturbed, mature mahogany;
A passerby gale whispers soon fleeting greetings,
as a docile, hydrating mist is mildly coating
subtly-chiming leaves with each little droplet, meeting...
until the finale is complete, and the area is soaking.
Ancestral hymns of livelihood sings forth from the working chirper.
To fortify before the long flight was the maker's decision.
Hopping-out and spreading wings without a boast of fervor,
after building and crafting stability, with materials for revisions;
Then gone, left an emptiness and desire for that creator of mine;
Patiently poised in a particular place and position;
Now, reappeared from being away for a season in time;
My purpose and function has arrived back into fruition.

About this poem
I was given inspiration one night in a Cuyahoga County jail. Even though my situation was rather unwell at the time, I had a moment of clarity, serenity, and creativity, and after around 5 hours throughout that night into the next morning, I scratched draft after draft (I somehow had a decent flimsy pen and quite a few sheets of paper to work with) and made sure it was picture perfect in terms of penmanship. I mailed it to my mother after a grueling process of deliberating, from my perspective, to be the most appropriate way to convey an uncommon metaphor and a different approach on nature while balancing the syllable count and maintaining a decent rhyme structure. I really enjoy this one, and I hope you do as well! Thank you! more »
